CHAPTER 12

My friend teaches 5th grade social studies.  Her next unit is on the Civil War / War Between the States.  Put yourself in her shoes and leave some suggestions on how she could use technology to bring this important (but long ago) topic to life for her students.

What types of technology and/or applications could she use with her students?  Can the technology of today really be used with something that happened so long ago?

  1. Ashley says... Integrating technology into each curriculum is important; in the social studies curriculum teachers face the issue of not having enough time to cover all of the information. Therefore, strategies for integrating technology into the social studies curriculum will enhance the learning for the varied topics and concepts being taught. There are many strategies that will help teachers integrate technology into this curriculum such as virtual trips, graphic presentations, and digital storytelling. I think technology is a great way to enhance the learning of the students because they can learn more on a topic than just from reading in a textbook.

  2. The teacher could have students create a website about the Civil War. They could also use Kindle to read different books about this subject. Virtual field trips could be taken to the different battle sites, and research why each site was important to the North or South.

  3. I think that technology today can be used to things long ago. The first two ways that come to mind are WebQuest and Virtual field trips. The WebQuest can be having questions and articles about the Civil War that is age appropriate. A teacher can take her class on a virtual field trip. For example, she can take her class on a virtual field trip to the battlefield of Gettysburg.

  4. The first thing that pops into my mind is Virtual field trips. Since I read Chapter 12 I have thought that was a great idea, and plan to use it in my classroom. She can have the students look at the different battle fields, and she can have them research about each. I believe the students will really enjoy this. Afterwards, she could then allow each student to make a powerpoint presentation over what they learned from research and the virtual field trip.

  5. She could use PowerPoint and the projector to present information and pictures from the Civil War to her students. This use of technology would definitely grab their attention and get them motivated to learn about history. Also, she could assign students to an important figure or battle site from the Civil War and have them create a poster or a PowerPoint on it. Not only will the student learn from doing the necessary research to complete the project but they will also feel important when presenting their projects to their fellow classmates.

  6. With the upcoming Civil War chapter. The teacher can decide what topics she wanted to have the students find information on. Maybe one day she could have the students do research and do an reinactment of a planning session between then Generals and their officers in a tent. They can use the computer to look up the information to make them selves a script. They could do research and do a Powerpoint on the information on diffferent battles that took place during the war. They could have study guides to help them get the answers to the questions before the test.
