LEAVE A COMMENT: CHAPTER 8

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:  As a classroom teacher, how do you perceive your role in the selection of web-based resources?  More and more learning materials are found on the internet rather than on software that we select and load.  How does having material on the internet change your role as a teacher?  How will you keep your students safe as they use web-based research for learning new skills?

  1. I will try to keep my students safe by telling them up front that there will be websites they will not use for any type of project, assignment, paper, etc. while they in my my class. I will inform them that if they use those websites they will receive a failing grade. As teachers we need to try to limit the amount of web-based resources that our students are using. Especially in our classrooms, we need to make sure they are using on the software that is downloaded for them to use. Maybe blocking the site that can't be used will help limit this problem.

  2. I think the internet is a wonderful tool for the classroom. We will have the opportunity to meet other people from other countries and find out about their culture. Most schools have blocks on unwanted sites, but we must still watch over our students to keep them safe on the web.

  3. Teresa Schuyler said,
Students have more complete access to school information that we did when we were in the grades that they are. I feel the technology is great for the students that do not have the access to get their work done. I feel that students will not abuse the right to the internet. They know what it will mean for them if they do. At the school that I work. We send forms home at the beginning of the year so the parents can sign and let the students have access to the internet incase they have projects to do. And as Brenda said, " the school blocks internet sights and not let the students get on them. Even the Board of Education has certain web sights of ours blocked.

  4. The Internet has become a prime source for so much information. I feel that this tool is very helpful in the classroom. As a teacher it will be my job to make sure my students know how to use the Internet appropriately; although in most school systems many sites are blocked so that students are not allowed to access them. Using the Internet in a classroom opens many new windows in the learning spectrum, as I have learned. This tool allows our students to learn more about various topics of interest.

  5. I feel it is my role as a teacher to choose productive web-based resources that will challenge my students. I also feel it is my role to choose safe web-based resources. I can use other sources on the internet to help me teach. My students can also use those sources. However, I would ask the school to block the sites that are not safe and not scholarly.

  6. The internet is a valuable tool for students to be able to use in a classroom. It allows them to learn so much more about a topic than simply what the textbook teaches. To keep my students safe, I will set clear guidelines on what they can look at and what information they can access. I will explain to them that it is just like shopping without your parents supervision in a mall, you should be very careful and take precautions.

  7. The internet is a wonderful tool, and students should be opened to that world as it is a way of life in these times. Although, as a teacher, I will monitor all activity and be sure everyone follows school guidelines at all times.

  8. Teachers have a wealth of tools that they can utilize over the internet. Webquests have been used to enhance students learning. It is up to the teacher to make proper steps to ensure the webquest is adequate for the lesson. As teachers, we want to make sure that our students view the internet as a valuable resource and we can do that by choosing the right program for the right lesson or class.
